Increase Awareness and Strengthen Resources

Why Postvention Is Crucial?

Human life is invaluable. The economic costs associated with suicide are staggering: it is estimated that productivity losses in the European Union exceed 9.07 billion euros, accounting for approximately 0.061% of the EU's GDP. Indirect costs per suicide in the EU-28 amount to around 231,088 euros. Given that these figures are from 2015, current costs may be even higher due to challenges related to the economic climate, environmental changes, and psychological distress frequently experienced by those affected by suicide.

The "POSTVENTION ELLIPSE" Project

The "POSTVENTION ELLIPSE" project offers a free, certified e-learning course for those in mourning, their families, professionals, and communities, supporting vital suicide prevention strategies. This course complements the third edition of the popular ELLIPSE Gatekeeper+ suicide prevention courses available in English, Polish, and Swedish on the educational platform Navoica.pl. Participants have access to six modules, 33 lessons, and a comprehensive Postvention Handbook, serving as an essential guide for postvention training.

About the ELLIPSE Postvention Project

The need for postvention training is significant, and education in this area is crucial to countering the severe impacts of suicide at the levels of individuals, families, schools, workplaces, local communities, and society as a whole. The ELLIPSE Postvention Project supports people who have experienced suicide loss and their support networks in navigating the complex grieving process, offering a wealth of knowledge, skills, and practical tools.

This pioneering educational initiative, co-funded by the European Union, is the result of collaboration between Swedish and Polish experts (Project Number: 2023-1-SE01-KA210-ADU-000157831), running from September 1, 2023, to August 31, 2024. Its goal is to create accessible and effective educational resources on postvention through a partnership between:

  • Jagiellonian University in Kraków (Project Leader: Assoc. Prof. Tomasz Milewicz)
  • Polish Association of Suicidology (Project Leader: Szymon Wojczakowski, MA)
  • SPES Blekinge (International Project Leader: Dr. Anna Baran, and until February 2024, Maiellen Stensmark, former Chair of SPES Blekinge)

Together, we aim to establish lasting foundations for suicide prevention education, including postvention, in Europe and worldwide.
